ENTREPRENUERSHIP PROJECT IN BANGATA WARD BY SUPPORT FROM

SHELL COMPANY.

1.     Introduction

Bright Star Foundation (BSF) has been in service to the people in accordance to preset objectives and action plans. With reference to mission and vision of the organization we aim to join hands with government strategies on poverty reduction and sustainable development goals by 2030. Our focus is in assisting children from very needy families who lack other school necessities apart from school fees which is paid by the government. We also assist people in improving their livelihoods by enabling entrepreneurs to establish their business by providing essential assets like appliances, equipments and livestock, and also business development support to ensure consistency and sustainability.

2.     Our Bases

Bright Star Foundation focus is to address challenges which hinder peoples’ development through its vision and mission.

1.     Vision

Developing societies that own their growth.

2.     Mission

Influencing commitment and capabilities in utilizing the accessible resources to advance and sustain livelihoods.

3.     Support provided to entrepreneurs

We have a total number of 37 Entrepreneurs supported in enabling them to do different projects at their homes to improve and sustain their livelihood. There are single projects implementers and group project implementers. Entrepreneurs were enabled to own small scale projects like: milking cows, pigs, bee hives, compressor, saloon equipments (hair dryers), eggs incubators, printers & photocopy machines and water pumps for vegetable plantations.

Conditions to the entrepreneurs supported with animals like cows and pigs. The first calf cow should be given to another needy person to improve his livelihood. For pigs’ project, the first delivery, 4 pigs female and male should also be given to other 2 persons in need of pigs.

Challenges

  • The entrepreneurs who needed support were many but the number was narrowed down to fit the planned budget.
  • Lack of business education to improve performance of their projects to obtain the market of their produces.

4.     Education Support by the BSF Liebel for Tansania

The year 2020 January has been of impact derived changes in our approach. We decided to move from urban to rural areas basing on the findings during the implementation period. We found that parents from urban schools couldn’t be compared with the rural parents in terms of income. The urban parents are better off than the rural parents in terms of income generating activities.

We introduced ourselves to the Arusha district Council and explained our objectives. Thereafter they advised us to focus on one thing which will be a major support to the students. Therefore we decided to counter absenteeism as well as encourage excellence in education. Basing on our need assessment we found that it was food, most of the parents can’t afford to pay for food for their children and this has been an obstacle for their performance. Hence among the wards in the districts we selected two wards. However, basing on the logistic purposes and our growth we decided to select schools in the neighboring areas where we can do our pilot program and monitor the exercise accordingly.  Hence we are now in Bangata Ward and Sokon II Wards in Bangata and Ngiresi Secondary Schools. We are now supporting a total of 100 students that is 50 students from each school.

Challenges in Education Sector

Bangata Secondary School

  • A huge number of students who need meals support so as to improve their presence in school and performance.
  • Books for Arts subjects (History, Geography, Swahili and English)
  • Girls who are in the examination class are in danger of rape due to very low security in the time of coming to schools very early in the morning and going home very late in the evening. In order to overcome the challenge teachers have proposed to build girls dormitories to avoid the alarming challenge.
  • Additional number of classrooms so as to reduce the number of 120 students being in one classroom.
  • A room for kitchen where the meals for students is prepared. The current place is not sufficient and hygiene.

Ngiresi Sec. School

  • A number of students lack food and this lead to absenteeism in school which lead the students to employees while they are young (child labor) .
  • Unfinished classrooms i.e floor, windows and ceiling boards.
  • Students dropouts schools due to lack of family support which caused by the low level of the parents.
  • Books for science and Arts lessons.
